Benefits of a floor desk

Are floor desks good for you?

Floor desks, or low desks, come with many benefits which can improve mobility range within the hips and ankle joints.

Have you ever noticed hip pain when sitting cross legged on the floor? Well this may be what you’re looking for.

Using a desk to sit on the floor won’t make you make become super flexible overnight but it will help. Your personal range and strength will improve, and that’s really what matters.

So what can you expect from your floor desk?

Improved Hip Mobility & Flexibility

When using a low desk for sitting on the floor, your body naturally encourages you to change position regularly.

This encourages your hips to move through a greater range of motion than a chair does. This can help keep hip joints supple.

Better Posture Awareness

You ideally want to be without a back-rest when you sit at a desk on the floor.

This way you’re likely to adjust more and engage your core muscles to stay upright.

This regular movement promotes spinal alignment and reduce slouching.

Stronger Core & Leg Muscles

Getting up and down from the floor repeatedly strengthens the core, glutes, and leg muscles.

This supports functional strength and balance.

When you use a desk that is designed for floor sitting, you engage with more aspects of the body.

You’re basically doing a slow squat every time you get up to make a cup of tea and then. sit down again to return to work!

Improved Circulation

Sitting at a floor desk encourages more frequent postural shifts (cross-legged, kneeling, squatting, side-sitting).

This helps reduce stiffness and keeps blood flowing compared to sitting in a static chair.

I personally get cold feet when sitting at a normal desk or sitting position.

Enhanced Joint Health & Longevity

Regular floor sitting and standing helps maintain joint lubrication and resilience, especially in the knees and ankles.

As you get older, this can support you with mobility and balance.

How many elderly people do you hear of falling?

You may be able to lower your chances of this happening to you just by using a using a desk designed for sitting on the floor.

What a convenient health hack!

If you haven’t seen it, watch ‘Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zone’ on Netflix which touches on this very subject.

I’ve provided a link to the book in case the series is no longer available.
